Winkler is one of the 254 counties of Texas State in the U.S. and came into being in 1887, while its organization occurred in 1910. It derives its name from a Confederate Army’s Colonel, Clinton McKamy Wickler. Kermit is the region’s County seat covering an area of 6.52 km². 

From the details of the 2019 census, Winkler County has a population of 8,010, making it the 181st largest county in the U.S., Texas. The area’s estimated population is 8,242 and 8,474 in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The county covers an area of 2,178 km². 

Winkler County, Texas, is in the 23rd Congressional District and the 31st Senatorial District. 

Geography of Winkler County 

The county sits on the west side of Texas, in Pecos Valley. The northeastern part of this region lies on the Llano Estacado (Staked Plains). 

The county’s northeast side is Andrew County, Loving County on the west, Ector County on the east, Ward County on the south, and New Mexico on the northwest side. The county seat, Kermit, is 40 miles from western Odessa. The county has a latitude of 31°40′ north, while its longitude is 103°03′ west. 

Topography of Winkler, Texas 

The county land has a gently rolling to level scenery. A belt of sand dunes crosses the central section of the land horizontally. These dunes are active, windblown, and elevation 30 to 40 feet above sea level. 

 The region soils include clay loams, sandy loams, reddish-brown to dark-brown neutral sands, and shallow calcareous clay loams. 

 The county has insignificant drainage due to its nearly flat surface. Rain water assembles in various playas of different sizes. Moreover, the region has numerous small gullies next to the west-facing escarpment (Concho Bluff), forming the Caprock’s edge. Cheyenne and Monument are the two irregular draws that run across the west-central and the central part of Winkler County. 

The area’s vegetation includes scrub brush, grasses, cacti, creosote bush, and scattered mottes of wild plums and willows. 

Demographics of Winkler County 

The race makeup of this county by 2020 consists of 51.9%-White, 1.1%-Asian, 2.1%-Black American, 0.0%-Pacific Islanders, 1.7%-American Indian, 23.1%-others, 20.0%- two or more races. The county’s population has two ethnic groups – Latino or Hispanic. 

According to sex and gender, 7.4% of the residents are below five years, 29.1 below 18 years, while 12.0% are 65 years and above. Females in the county make up 48.3% of its population.

The county receives an average annual rainfall of 14 inches. The amount is significantly lower than the average yearly rainfall in the U.S., 38 inches. The wettest month is July, with 2.0 inches of rain, while January is the driest having 0.4 inches. Winkler County is one of the driest parts of Texas State 

The region has average annual snow of 3 inches and is way below the U.S. average of 28 inches. The snowiest month is January, with 1.6 inches of snow. 

Winkler County has 261 sunny days annually, while there are 205 such days in the U.S. The region’s hottest month is July, having a temperature of 95.6° on average. The area has three comfortable months (March, April, and October) of high temperatures ranging between 70° and 85°. 

The county has relatively low humidity, and thus, it’s a comfortable place to live. Even so, there are a few summer season days with unpleasant moisture. June, July, and August are the most humid months, but the humidity is still tolerable.
