Live Oak County Topography

Live Oak County has a flat to rolling terrain with grasses, blackbrush, mesquite, small live oak, post oak, and peaky pear. The area covers about 1,057 square miles with an elevation of about 70 to 400 feet. Live Oak County soil composition varies throughout the County.

In the eastern part of the County, the soil is dark and loamy, which overlies clayey subsoils. Northwestern areas of the county have grey to dark clayey topsoil that covers a limestone layer that is 40 inches into the surface. Other parts of the County are covered in light to dark-colored loam soils, covering a reddish subsoil and a thin layer of limestone.

Live Oak county has a couple of water bodies. The Atascosa River drains the northern third of the County and flows into the Frio River. Part of the County is drained by the Frio, which forms the Choke Canyon Reservoir. The Frio River flows further into the Nueces River, which passes through Live Oak County in the southeastern direction draining into Lake Corpus Christi, located in the County’s southeastern corner.
