Atascosa county started back in 1856. It borders Bexar County to the North. Also, San Antonio encompasses Atascosa county as part of the Braunfels Metropolitan Area. Atascosa county has a population of 52,815 people as of 2021.  

Jourdanton is Atascosa’s county seat. Jourdanton lies off highways thirteen and ninety-seven, about thirty-three miles towards the south of San Antonio. Atascosa’s geographic center point lies 28°50′ North, 98°30′ West. 

Atascosa spreads on a 1218 square mile piece of land. The county’s topography is on the same level as an elevation range of three-fifty to seven-hundred feet. Plus, it has deep soils that are loamy towards the surface and clayey subsoils. That said, here’s what you need to know about Atascosa county in Texas.  

Atascosa Cowboy Connect Connecting Communities 

Atascosa Cowboy Connect entails a transit system following set routes connecting the Atascosa county’s cities. This connection may deviate its way to half a mile to accommodate the people who may not reach the terminals.    

Alamo Regional Transit began a new system of transit in July 2020. They partner with Atascosa county, Jourdanton city, and the cities of Pleasanton and Poteet. Thus, Atascosa Cowboy Connect brings the three communities together in two to one-hour-long loops. The Connect serves them reliably and at affordable rates.

Atascosa County Offices  

The Animal Control office is open from Mon through Fri, from 9 am to 5 pm. The office’s phone is 830-769-2341. The county commissioners occupy the commissioner’s court. They are four, each representing the four precincts of Atascosa. Also, you have four constables for each precinct.  

The other offices include the sheriff, the tax assessor, treasurer, county auditor, Emergency management, county judge, justice of the peace, fire marshal, law court, County election, and EMS. 

Atascosa county offices are open from Monday to Friday from seven-thirty am to five pm in the evening. In some cases, like in Atascosa Animal Control Department, you may also obtain their annual reports from the site.  

Atascosa District Offices  

You have several district offices in Atascosa, including the District Clerk, Juvenile, District’s attorney, Child protection Court, Adult Probation, and District’s court. 

In case you want to report child abuse, contact the children protection court at 1-800-252-5400. Their offices are open from Mon to Fri: seven to five pm Monday-Thursday and eight to five on Fridays. Atascosa Municipalities 

Campbellton, TX: is on the Farm Road ton-ninety-nine, Highway 281A and the River of Atascosa, 12 miles Christen (East), Southeast Atascosa. It’s named after John F. Campbel, who established a ranch there in 1855. Also, Mr. Campbell started the first store, school and conducted cathartic services at his house. The municipality has grown ever since to the current city we know.  

Charlotte, TX: Charlotte lies at the meeting point of Highway ninety-seven and farm roads 1548, 140, and 1333. It is in the southwestern area of Atascosa. It was curved at the Old Tuboy Ranch, which T.H. Sanderson and Jourdan Campbell initially owned it. J.F. Franklin offered to construct the first railway that passed through the town. DR Charles Simmons gave the city its name, and he aided in its development.  

Christine, TX: Christine, TX on Farm road 140 one-forty miles south of Jourdanton in central southern Atascosa. The municipality began back in 1909, and by nineteen-ten, the town had two hotels, one post office, one department store, and a cafe. The town’s primary developer was C.F. Simmons. 

Coughran, TX: Coughran municipality started back in nineteen-twelve. After whom the town got named, W.A Coughran developed the township from 1912, and in nineteen-thirteen, he started a bank, a store, a school, and one post office. Though the town has had many ups and downs, it continues to thrive and develop through its population and economic growth.  

Leming, TX: is on the junction between farm road fourteen-seventy and Highway 281. Since its development in eighteen-eighty, the town has steadily grown economically and in population. As of 2000, its population had increased from twenty to over 260 people.   

McCoy, TX: Is in the central-eastern Atascosa. The town’s on Road five-forty-one. The city started in 1913, named after W.A McCoy, who donated the land during the construction of the Gulf Railroad. Through the development of schools, business, and population and settlement growth, the town has continuously increased ever since.

Atascosa Commissioner’s Court Office Description 

There are three things to note about this office. First, the members of the Commissioners court exercise a diverse policy-making Authority. Second, the office represents a crucial county precinct, and finally, members’ responsibility is to maintain and build county bridges and roads within the specific precinct.  

The Commissioner’s court  

Generally, the Commissioner’s court oversees general businesses of Atascosa. Plus, it has four commissioners and Atascosa’s county judge. Some of the Commissioners’ court roles include: 

  • Adopting the tax rate and the budget of the county 
  • Approving all county purchases in the budget 
  • Filling vacancies that may be present in appointive and elective offices 
  • Sets all benefits and salaries 
  • May authorize contacts in exclusive authority
