Archer is one of the 254 counties of Texas, U.S.A., located on the north-central side of the state. The county stands at the 174th position in the state. 

According to the 2021 census, Archer County has an estimated population of 8,259, sits on a 910 sq. mi land area, and has a population density of 10/ sq.mi. 

The average rainfall in the region is 31 inches and is slightly lower than 38 inches in the U.S.       

Archer County is among the congressional 13 counties and position 30 in the senatorial district of Texas. 

Archer City is Archer’s county seat. The city and the county are in honor of Branch Tanner Archer, a Republic of Texas commissioner. 

Republican James Frank, a Wichita businessman, is the county’s representative in the Texas House of Representatives. There are 150 members of this house, with each representing approximately 167 637 people.

Is Archer Safe? 

One of the most striking factors about this county is that some crimes have zero reported cases throughout the year. According to an F.B.I. report in 2019,  murder, theft, robbery, and vehicle theft weren’t reported. 

From the same report, Archer city is lower than the national crime rate by 81%, and the possibility of being a crime victim is 1 in 127 people. 

There is also a notable decline in property crime while violent crime increases from the statistics of the four years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2019). Generally, Archer city’s crime rate has gone down by 66% over the years. 

The above trends have made Archer a safe place 43 times more than other United States cities. 

Climate And Average Weather In Archer County 

Archer County’s summers are hot, humid, and clear, while winters are cold, windy, and partially cloudy. On average, the temperature ranges between 34°F to 98°F. 

According to WeatherSpark, between June and September is the best time to visit Archer County. This period is favorable for hot-weather activities. Sunny days mount up to 241 per year, with the hottest day being July 25th at around 96 degrees. 

Rain falls throughout the year, with the average rainfall per year being 31 inches. However, most of it falls 31 days around August 3rd  at an average of 6.4 inches. Even so, April and May are the wettest months of the year in Archer County. Moreover, the minimum rain falls a few days, just about November 8th, 1.8 inches on average. 

On average, there are 59.9 days in a year with measurable precipitation in Archer County compared to 106.2 days in the entire United States. 

The annual snowfall is 2.4 inches on average which is way below the U.S. at 27.8 inches per year. 

The Economy of Archer County        

Archer county’s healthy economy allows its people to have a paying and stable job that enables them to cater for their basic needs and any other rising expenses.  

Archer county’s economy offers jobs to 4440 people. The industries that provide these jobs include Professional Scientific and Technical Services, Construction, Retail Business, Arts and Leisure, Health Service, and Social Support. 

Andrews county’s unemployment rate ranges from 1.9% to 8.2% over the years. According to the United States Federal Reserve, the unemployment rate was 4.3% by July 2021. 

Dairy Industry in Archer County     

Archer county is well-known for producing dairy in Texas. By 2019, there were 37 working dairy farms in Scotland and Windthorst cities of the southeastern part of Archer County. 

The residents of these cities started engaging in dairy activities in 1900, and the industry is still thriving up to date. 

To boost this industry, the Federal government offers Dairy Price Support Program to dairy farmers. The program is one of the agricultural support programs that maintain milk’s minimum farm price in the production of dairy goods. 

Even though many operating dairies are located in this place, the number of dairy cattle in the two regions makes up a small section of the number found in the rest of Texas. 

Attraction Sites in Archer county 

Archer County has various mainstream attractions, which include the following: 

  1. Bookstores 

For book lovers, this is the place for you! Booked Up is famous for offering uncommon, refined, and educational books in large numbers. 

The internationally known store’s owner is Larry McMurtry and operates from Monday to Sunday. Book Up lies on Highway 79, towards the south. 

  1. Hunting 

Archer County has various species of animals for hunting activities. These animals include cougars, deer, turkey, coyotes, wild hogs, quail, bobcats, and doves. 

There are several individuals available in the area to offer hunting guidance to those interested throughout the year. 

  1. City Park 

You can carry out fun activities at places such as the Hilbers Playground are available in Burkett Park. The playground is near the Park Pavillion. It’s a great place for picnics, leisure walks and playing. 

In the park, there is also Archer City Swimming Pool on the western side. Many locals visit the swimming pool during the winter season. Usually, the pool opens when kids break for holidays and closes when they go back to school. 

On the same park grounds, is the Miniature Golf Course beside the swimming pool. It’s open during the summer season. 

Nonetheless, one can rent the course for private occasions and celebrations.  

Next to Miniature Golf Course’s entrance are walking trails descending into the neighboring landscape 

  1. Archer County Jail 

By 1909, the number of inmates in the original jail exceeded its capacity. In September 1910, the construction of a larger facility was complete. 

The sandstone building has the Sheriff’s living quarters on the ground floor while the cells and a non-functional hanging gallow occupy the second and the third floors. 

The first inmate to be hosted in the new jail was a horse thief. The facility was a home for over 800 convicts until the completion of another prison in 1974. 

This ancient detention center is situated at  203 E. Plum and is out of public reach. 

Other historical sites include D.S. Dudley Wild West Show, Bowman Cemetery, and Bowman Church.   

  1. Archer City Country Club 

This club has a stunning golf course with nine holes open the whole day throughout the week. There are also carts and a snack bar in the facility.
