Washington is one of the 254 counties that make up Texas State in the U.S. It lies in southeastern central Texas in the Black Prairies area. The county dates back to 1835, where it started as a municipality of Mexico and was later organized in 1837. It derives its name from the U.S. first President, George Washington. 

The county seat of this region is Brenham, which also happens to be the largest city in Washington, Texas. This county is one of the 10th Congressional district members and the 18th Senatorial district. 

The region sits on a 622 square miles area, where 604 sq mi is land and 18 is water. According to the 2020 census report, the county has a population of 35,805 residents. That ranks the region as the 86th  county in Texas. 

Why is Washington County the birthplace of Texas? 

There is an unincorporated community along the Brazos River in Washington, Texas, known as Washington-on-the-Brazos. The region is the host of the March 1, 1836 delegates convention. The agenda of this meeting was to announce officially that Texas intends to separate from Mexico. The delegation also drafted a constitution for the new Republic of Texas. 

Washington County Demographics 

The population of Washington County is made up of different races and ethnic groups. These include the white- 74.68%, African/ Black American- 18.66%, Native American- 0.27%, Asians- 1.21%, other races- 4.02%, and two or more races- 1.16%. 8.71% of the residents are either Latino or Hispanic in any race. 

Regarding sex and age, the population’s 5.6% is below five years, 21.4% is below 18 years, and 22.0% is the age bracket of 65 years and above. 51.1% of the residents are female. Moreover, the median age for the people of Washington, Texas, is 41.5 years young. 

The county’s household median income in 2019 was $54,971. The figure is slightly higher than the median income of Bell and Hunt counties which had $54,884 and $54,959, respectively. Even so, 8.8% of families in Washington County are poor. 

Parks and Recreation in Washington County 

Brenham City has more than 280 acres of parkland. The area consists of open space, developed and undeveloped parks, making it an ideal place for your leisure needs. These include the following: 


  1. Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site ((936) 878-2214)

The site is at 23400 Park Road 12, Washington, Texas, along the Brazos River. It’s an expansive park ground providing an attractive environment for bird-watching, sightseeing, and picnic purposes. 

This recreational facility leads Republic Museums, Barrington Plantation, and Independence Hall, offering a unique insight into independence fighters’ times and lives. 


  1. Toubin Park

It’s a State Archeological Landmark (extensive historic cisterns system). Dating back to the late 1800s, the cisterns helped store rainwater for fire fighting in public places. You can enjoy self-guided tours through the pocket park – historic downtown in Brenham. The facility’s address is 208 South Park Street, Brenham, Texas 77833. 


  1. TC Ranch Ventures 

The ranch is at 16111 Newman League Road, Washington, Texas 77880. The small farm offers personalized riding horses and Horsemanship courses. 


  1. Hohlt Park 

The park occupies 79.9 acres of land. It offers various recreational facilities, including: 

  • 11 multipurpose grounds
  • Six softball grounds
  • Two baseball grounds
  • Three sand volleyball courts
  • Two playgrounds
  • 9-holes of disc golf
  • Approximately 1-mile jogging/walking path

  1. Fireman’s Park 

The facility gives a memorable atmosphere for family events and community affairs, and after its establishment in 1884, the fire department acquired the park. However, the department eventually gave it to Brenham City in exchange for debt cancellation on March 14, 1917.
