Trinity county History

The Atakapa Indian tribe lived in this area until the 1820s, when they were evicted by Anglo immigrants and forced out of the site by Native Americans. Until late 1850, Texas divided Houston into two separate jurisdictions: Trinity and Houston. Groveton became the county seat in 1882.

Before the American Civil War, residents of Trinity County called the area home. Residents of East Texas and the rest of Texas lived in a borderland between them. Corn, cotton, and tobacco were all still produced by the local farmers in the area. The Trinity River served as a marketing tool for local merchants. Over the decade, plantation agriculture systems grew, increasing slavery. As a result of Trinity County’s breakaway from the Union, lower land values and property losses occurred, as well as lower agricultural prices.

As time went on, Trinity County’s economy rebounded and altered dramatically. By building lines in 1872 and establishing several lumber firms during the 1880s, The Great Northern Railroad boosted property values significantly. Corn, cotton, and wheat were the primary crops grown by farmers during this period, while the wood industry declined due to excessive logging. Thanks to New Deal programs, people who hadn’t worked before the 1930s returned to the workforce. After World War II, the lumber sector recovered, and oil revenues remained stable until the 1980s.
