In southeastern Texas, you will find San Jacinto County. It is on the Trinity River, the longest river in Texas. You will find Trinity County to the north of San Jacinto, Montgomery to the southwest, Liberty to the southeast, Polk to the east, and Walker to the west. The county’s center point coordinates are 30.58ºN 95.16ºW. 

San Jacinto was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1888. It gets its name from the famous Battle of San Jacinto. During the San Jacinto Battle, Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836.  

San Jacinto Cities 

  1. Coldspring

Coldspring is a city in San Jacinto and the County’s seat. It covers an area of 4.82 km² at the junction of State Highway 150 and farm roads 2025, 946, and 1514.  

The area code is 936 and has 853 residents under it, according to the 2010 census.  

  1. Point Blank

Point Blank is a city in San Jacinto with 688 as of the 2010 census. The area code is 936. It covers a 5.387 km² total area on the northwest side of Lake Livingston at the junction of US Highway 190 and State Highway 156. 

  1. Shepherd

The City of Shepherd is in San Jacinto County, Texas, at US Highway 59 and State Highway 150. It has a population of 2,319 as of the 2010 US census. It is the largest town covering a total area of 15.85 km². 

Other census-designated places in San Jacinto are Oakhurst and Cape Royale. 

Topography  

San Jacinto covers 1630 km², 1470km² of which island, and 150 km² is water. The county is primarily hilly and wooded, surrounded by oak, pine, cider, walnut, and pecan. Most of the county is in Sam Houston National Forest. The heights range between 374 and 386 feet.  

The soils are primarily iron-rich clayey subsoils, loamy, and reddish. The San Jacinto River, Winter Bayou, Stephen Creek, and Big Creek run through the County. The Trinity River flows along the eastern boundary of the County, while Peach Creek runs along the southwestern border.  

The road network in San Jacinto is served by US Highways 190 and 59 and State Highways 150 and 156. 

Climate 

The climate in San Jacinto is favorable, with an annual best places comfort index of 7 out of 10. It is above average compared to other counties in Texas. The summer high is 93 degrees in July, while the winter low in January is 39 degrees. March, April, and October are the most exciting months, while July and August are the least favorable.  

On average, the county receives 0 inches of snow and 51 inches of rain annually. The US gets 28 inches of snow and 38 inches of rain, on average per year. The county also enjoys 204 sunny days compared to 205 days in the US. San Jacinto gets 93 days of precipitation per year.   

Demographics 

According to April 1, 2010, US Census, San Jacinto has a population of 27,402. 50.2% of whom are females. 22.5% are 65 years and above, 21.2% are under 18 years old, and 5.4% are under 5.  

The largest racial group in San Jacinto is whites at 86.7%, followed by African Americans or blacks at 9.5%. Alaska Native and American Indian are at 1.0%, Asians are at 0.5%, and other Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiian are 0.1%.  

84.5% of persons aged 25 or above are high school graduates or higher, while 11.2% of the same age bracket have at least attained a Bachelor’s degree or higher.  

Economy  

The unemployment rate in San Jacinto is at 9.0%, while it is 6.0% in the US. However, the income tax rate for San Jacinto is 0.0%, while it is 4.6% in the US. The average income per person in San Jacinto is $24,037 per year, while it is $28,555 annually in the US. The median household income is $46,969 per year, while the US is $53,482.  

In addition to the 6.25% Texas sales tax rate, San Jacinto County collects an additional 0.5%, making the minimum sales tax rate in San Jacinto 6.75%. Currently, each of the Cities and towns contains a further 0.5% setting the maximum sales tax rate in San Jacinto at 7.25%.  

The largest employer in San Jacinto is the construction industry, followed by retail trade, then the manufacturing industry.

San Jacinto County has several attraction sites where you can enjoy different activities such as horse riding, hiking, picnics, among others. These places include Lake Livingston, Coldspring Farm, and Ranch, Temple Creek Ranch, Double Lake Recreation Area, Big Creek, etc.
