San Augustine County is located in the Deep Eastern part of Texas, south of Center, east of Nacogdoches, and west of the Toledo Bend Reservoir. San Augustine is the county seat, and it is the county’s largest town, located at the intersection of State Highways 21 & 147, US Highway 96, and Farm roads 353, 711, and 2213.   

The earliest European settlement in the region was in 1717 when Spanish missionaries established Mission Dolores. In 1721, the mission was disbanded and reconstituted. It remained in operation up to 1773 and is now preserved as the Mission Dolores State Historic Site.   

In 1773, the government ordered the closure of all missions in East Texas, and the Spanish immigrants withdrew unwillingly. You may find historic structures and pathways throughout the city and surrounding areas. Additionally, locals and tourists may enjoy outdoor activities at Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Toledo Bend Reservoir.  

Geography of San Augustine 

San Augustine is at latitude 31° 28′ north and longitude 94° 08′ west. It has a land area of 4.8 sq miles (12 km2), as per the United States Census Bureau, with 4.7 sq miles (12 square kilometers) of land and 0.1 sq miles (0.26 square kilometers) (2.08 percent) of water, based on the Census Bureau.  

The Attoyac River & Nacogdoches County border the county to the west, Shelby County to the north,Sabine County to the east, and Angelina to the southwest. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Jasper County bound San Augustine to the south.

The county of San Augustine is served with a well-developed roadway system. The county’s significant highways are:

  • Highway 147

As of April 2020, San Augustine had a population estimate of 7,918, a decline compared with 8,865, which the county registered in 2010.  

According to the most recent figures available, the median household income in San Augustine as of 2019 was $40,353, with a poverty rate of 19.6 percent. In recent years, the median rental costs have been $656 every month, and the average residential value has been $80,000.

San Augustine Emergency Alerting System (EAS)
