History

Liberty county came about in 1837 and was named liberty by the residents. This was after the Texas revolution when the people wanted freedom from Mexico. They were given this land by the United States government. It was then that they founded the town of liberty. The first courthouse was built in 1839. In 1842, the first schoolhouse was built.

By 1848, there were over 200 families living in the town. By 1860, the population had grown to 2,000. The first post office was established in 1849. The first newspaper was published in 1851 and ran until 1853.

Early settlers enjoyed vast lands where they could hunt and fish. Many of these early settlers are buried in the cemetery at the old church. There were also many slaves who lived on the farms.

In 1852, the railroad arrived and brought prosperity to the town. At one time, it was home to two cotton mills.

Commissioner José Francisco Madero was instrumental in helping residents get title deeds to their property. He helped them avoid paying taxes, and he opened up the county to new businesses. The stable business environment enabled the government to grow hence stabilizing service delivery.
