Hopkins County, located in northeast Texas, was created and organized in 1846. The County was formed from Nacogdoches and Lamar counties. Later, Caddo Indians who occupied the area were displaced by the Cherokees.  

Hopkins County, Texas, was named after the family of David Hopkins, the pioneer in the area. The south Sulphur river borders the County on the north. The County seat of Hopkin is Sulphur Springs, located northeast of Dallas, Interstate Highway 30, 82 miles.

Hopkin county, the 84th largest County in Texas, has an estimated population of 37,776 and a growth rate of 0.92%. This information is according to the most recent United States census data. 50.93% of the people are female while 49.07% are male. 

White people are the largest ethnic community with 84.5%. The black or African Americans follow with 7.09%. Some other races represent 5.29%, while 0.67% are Asians. The rate of homeownership in Hopkins County is 69.6%. 80.2% of the married couples own homes, while 19.8% are renters.

Hopkins county occupies 789 miles. The Blackland Prairie covers half of the northern and quarter of the southwestern parts of the County. On the other hand, Claypan covers the southeastern quarter of the County.  

The soils in the Blackland prairie are mainly deep, well-drained, and loamy. The area produces little timber except for the areas along the stream that grow hardwood. On the other hand, claypan soils can absorb and release moisture. As a result, hardwood, pines, and evergreens thrive well.  

Hopkins county terrain is level to rolling and elevates 350 650 ft above mean sea level. White Oak Creek is the County’s most significant interior stream. The stream heads slightly to the northeast as it traverses from the east-west part of the County.  

Hopkins climate is humid and subtropical, while the average rainfall per year is 45 inches. The temperature ranges from an average low of 32° F to a high of 95° F . Two hundred thirty-eight days is the average growing season.
