In 1876, Hall County, Texas, was formed. The county is in southeastern Texas and borders Louisiana to the north. The county seat of the Hall is Memphis which has a population of about 2,000 people.  

It is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta region. In addition to being home to many plantations, it also contains some of the most fertile lands in the world. This area produces over half of all cotton grown in America. 

Hall County Economy 

The county’s economy depends heavily upon agriculture. Cotton production accounts for more than 90% of its income. Other crops include corn, soybeans, sorghum, wheat, peanuts, rice, sugarcane.  

Several large industries operate within the county, including: 

  • Memphis Lumber Company – A lumber company based in Memphis, TX. They produce pine boards used by furniture manufacturers throughout North America. 
  • Baker Hughes OilField Services – An oilfield service company with headquarters in Houston, TX. Baker Hughes provides drilling equipment, well servicing tools, and other related services to the oil industry. 
  • Cotton Ginners Association: Based in Dallas, TX, this organization represents approximately 1,500 ginners who work with cotton gins across the country. Their main purpose is to promote the use of their machines. 
  • Texas Department of Agriculture: Located in Austin, TX, TDA promotes agricultural development through research, extension education, marketing programs, and policy initiatives.  
  • Tex-Agri Life Insurance Co.: Founded in 1938 as an insurance agency, Tex-Agri now offers life insurance policies to farmers and ranchers.

Geography and Climate 

Located near the center of Texas, Hall County lies between two major bodies of water; Lake Charles and Sabine River. These rivers provide freshwater resources to the surrounding areas. To the south lies the Atchafalaya Basin wetlands.  

The climate varies from hot summers to mild winters. Summers can be very humid, while winter temperatures range from cold to warm. Rainfall averages around 10 inches per year. The most rain falls in summer. Annual rainfall is between 15 to 20 inches.  

Attractions in Hall County 

Lake Lanier islands- It has a surface area of over 2,000 square miles, making it one of the world’s largest man-made lakes. This lake attracts many tourists each year because of its beautiful scenery and wildlife. 

Don Carter State Park: Located on the shores of Lake Lanier, Don Carter State Park features camping facilities, hiking trails, boat rentals, fishing opportunities, swimming beaches, picnic tables, playgrounds, restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. 

Horseshoe Bay Resort & Marina – Horseshoe bay resort is situated along the shoreline of Lake Lanier. It consists of three separate resorts which offer guests lodging options ranging from cabins to condos.  

Elachee Nature Science Center. Elachee nature science center is a non-profit educational facility that provides visitors with information about local flora and fauna. They also have exhibitions for children and adults alike. 

Museum at Monte Sano– A museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Cherokee people. Visitors can view artifacts such as pottery, clothing, tools, weapons, jewelry, baskets, dolls, toys, books, paintings, photographs, and more. 

Quinlan Visual Arts Center: Quinlan visual arts center offers classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. Besides, fiber art, glassblowing, woodworking, metalwork, leatherwork, basketry, weaving, and other crafts. 

Public Notices and News in Hall County

Hall County Courthouse Restoration 

In 2009, the Hall County Board of Commissioners approved 2 million dollars towards restoring the historic courthouse building. In 2011, the project began construction. On April 25th, 2012, the new Hall county courthouse opened its doors.  

This renovation included updating all interior spaces, adding handicap-accessible bathrooms, renovating the courtroom, installing energy-efficient lighting fixtures, replacing windows, repairing exterior brick walls, repainting the outside of the building, and improving the landscaping around the building.

County Judge Office

Sheriff’s Department

Tom Heck has jurisdiction over criminal cases. His department includes deputies, jailers, investigators, and crime scene technicians. Contact the department at 806-259-2151. 

Tax Collector Office

The tax collector is Teresa Altman. She collects taxes on real estate sales, personal property tax collections, motor vehicle registrations, and delinquent accounts. Contact the office at 806-259-2125. 

County Treasurer

Janet Bridges is the head of this office. Her role is to collect money owed by the county from residents and businesses. The treasurer also collects fines and fees collected by the sheriff’s department. Contact the office at 806-259-2421 or email [email protected].   

Hall County, Texas Towns 

There are four significant towns. 

Memphis is the county seat of Hall County. It was founded in 1848 and named after a former governor, James W. Throckmorton. The town has been called “The City That Never Sleeps” because it never closes its businesses during regular business hours.  

Estelline is another town located on Highway 87, about 10 miles south of Memphis. Estelline was established as an oil boomtown in 1901 by William H. Estell, who had discovered oil there.  

Turkey Creek is also located along Highway 87, just north of Estelline. Turkey Creek was initially known for its turkeys but served mainly as a bedroom community to nearby residents. 

Lastly, we have Lakeview, which is located at the intersection of Highways 87 & 528. This small town consists mainly of mobile homes and trailer parks. There are no stores or restaurants here except for one gas station/convenience store that sells groceries and other items.
