Dimmit County was discovered by the Texas legislature in 1858 and later redeveloped in 1880. It has a land area of 3,458 square kilometers. The County’s population is 8,615, a drop from 10,124 in 2019. The seat of Dimmit County is in Carrizo springs.

The county got its name from Philip Dimmit, an adventurer from Pennsylvania who settled before the Texas Revolution. He fought in the Texas revolution war as a captain seeking independence. Dimmitt Philip never got the credit he deserved after fighting for Texas’ independence, so naming a County after him was a great idea. However, the legislature misspelled his name and adopted the name “Dimmit” instead of Dimmitt.

The legislature added Dimmit county as an extension of Maverick, Uvalde, Bexar, and Webb Counties.

Dimmit county’s main economic activity in the mid-1800s was animal husbandry. They reared horses, cattle, and sheep.

Captain Levi English, James Roberts, Duncan Lammons, and Constant Taylor are some of the early American natives to settle in Dimmit county. The Indians attacked the county settlers, forcing them to vacate their ranches and head to Carrizo Springs, Dimmit’s county seat, which was previously a “no man’s land.”
