Concho County Town List

Concho County, Texas, is named after the Concho River, which flows through this area. The river has many tributaries, including Caddo, Blanco, San Saba, Pecos, Red River, Rio Grande, Brazos, Colorado, and Trinity rivers.  

The name was given because there were so many creeks flowing into the river. It also means “the place where water runs over rocks.” This is true for all counties with names ending in -co. 

Paint Rock is Conchos county seat, located in the north-central region of Texas on Highway 62, about 30 miles west of Fort Stockton. Paint Rock is home to the annual rodeo held every year at the end of July.   

History of Concho County Texas 

In 1836, settlers began moving into what would become known as Concho County. In 1840, the first permanent settlement was made by John R. Bellamy near present-day Canyon Lake.  

He built his cabin along the banks of the Concho River, naming it “Bellamy Ville.” A post office opened that same year under the name of “Canyon City.” However, when a new town called Big Spring was established in 1849, Canyon City became part of its territory.  

By 1860, the population had grown enough to warrant incorporation as an independent city.

Concho Location and Population 

Concho is at Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the United States Census  Bureau, the city has an estimated total population of 2,726 as of 2019. Because of a peaceful environment and sound economy, the population is flourishing. It might double in the next ten years. 

Because of its good infrastructure, education system, health care facilities, job opportunities, etc. Concho is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. 

Regarding climate, Concho experiences a semiarid climate. Summers can get hot, but winters are mild. Precipitation averages 25 inches per annum. As such, citizens have a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.

Towns in Concho County, Texas 

Concho has two significant towns, namely Eden and Paint Rock. The former is on the bank of the Colorado River, while the latter is about 30 minutes away from the city’s center. Both of these places offer great recreational activities for tourists who visit this area. 

Eden is home to many parks, including the famous Eagle Mountain Park, which offers visitors beautiful views of the surrounding areas. This park also houses museums like the Museum of Western Art, the Pioneer Village Museum, and the Wild West Heritage Center.  

Other attractions include Old Town Square, where shops are selling local products, restaurants serving delicious food, and entertainment venues offering live performances. 

Paint Rock is another town with lots of things to do. It is the county seat of Concho County, Texas. Its primary attraction is the historic courthouse built in 1892.  

Tourists may enjoy visiting the museum inside it. Another exciting thing about this place is that it was once part of Mexico until the Mexican-American War ended in 1848.

According to a report by the U.S. News, the leading healthcare provider is Concho County Hospital in Eden, Texas. The hospital is under the county government and serves all the major towns, including New Deal, Stonewell, Tye, and Canyon Lake.  

They provide emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, the healthcare system offers outpatient clinics, dental offices, physical therapy centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and other medical facilities.

Transportation in Concho County 

As stated earlier, transportation plays a vital role in any society. Without proper transportations, we cannot move goods and materials easily. Transportation also helps us reach our destinations safely and quickly.  

For this reason, Concho County invests heavily in roads, bridges, airports, railways, seaports, waterways, and highways. 

Concho Valley Transit District is the leading public transport provider for residents and visitors alike. It provides bus routes throughout the entire area.  

In addition, it operates an airport shuttle that connects passengers between the airport and various locations around town. 

Roads in Concho County are paved and maintained by the local governments. However, they do not cover the whole region. Most parts of the road network remain unpaved.  

These areas are primarily rural or undeveloped. To address this problem, the federal government has allocated funds to build new roads.
