Comal County is situated between the Balcones Escarpment and the Blackland Prairies. It has a population of 161,501. The largest city in the county is New Braunfels, with a population of 63,675. The county was formed from Bexar County in 1846 and is found in the central part of Texas, southwest of Austin(capital of Texas), and northeast of San Antonio City. 

One of the most serene places in Texas, Comal County has excellent natural features like Canyon Lake, Cibolo Creek, and Guadalupe River. The water is fresh and clean, the canyon walls are unspoiled, and the area is calm.  

The county is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. 

Cities in Comal County 

The Comal County seat is New Braunfels. New Braunfels was founded by German settlers in 1845. It is the intersection point of Interstate 10 and Interstate 35. Many freight railroads in the city and several distribution companies like Leisure Pools, Ashley Furniture, Sam’s Club Distribution Center, and Walmart Distribution Center. Some events held in the town include the WURSTFEST, a “Ten Day Salute to Sausage.”

Comal County Growth 

The number of employed people in Comal County in March 2020 was 72 222, a slight increase from 71,554 in February the same year. The unemployment rate stood at 5.7%, down from 6%. 

Several factors have contributed to the growth of Comal County. Firstly, the northward sprawl of San Antonio. Since Comal County is located between San Antonio and Austin, residents can reside in Comal County while working in either of the two cities. 

The intersection of Interstate 10 and Interstate 35 makes movement easy for working residents. The New Braunfels Airport and the Austin Bergstrom and San Antonio International Airports also provide air transport. 

Another major contributor to growth is the Comal Independent School District. To cater to the large population of learners, the school district is expanding all its school sections. The expansion has made it possible to provide quality public education in Comal County. 

Comal County is relatively safer than the average US county; 11% of the county is secure, and the northeast part of the county is seen as the safest. The probability of being a victim of crime is 1 in every 84 people in the northeastern region of the county, while in the southwest, the probability is 1 in every 26. 

Climate in Comal County 

In Comal County, temperatures are most favorable in March, April, and October. In the three months, temperature varies between 70-85°. The hottest month is August, with a median high of 94.8°, while the coldest is January, with a median of 38.4°. Annually, there are 91.4 days when temperatures are over 90°, which is about median compared to other places in Texas. 

In Comal County, humidity is pleasant for most of the year. Months with unpleasant humid conditions are June, July, and August. The wet season starts in May and ends in September. October through April have favorable humid conditions. 

The wettest month is June. It averages 4.7 inches of rainfall, while the driest is January with 2.0 inches. Winter is the wettest season, with 29% of total annual precipitation. Spring is the driest month and accounts for 18% of the yearly rainfall. 

It rains the most in Comal County in March with 7.3 days of rain and the least in August with only 4.2 rainy days. There are 71.6 rainy days per year, which is average compared to other places in Texas. In summer, it rains the most (27%) compared to autumn 22% probability of a rainy day. 

Comal County has a snowfall of 0.3 inches annually, which is average in Texas. January receives the most snow (0.3) 

Where to Visit in Comal County 

There is plenty for the residents of Comal County to enjoy all around the year. There is a water-oriented recreation district in New Braunfels. It includes Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River, starting from the New Braunfels City in the east to Guadalupe State Park on the west. 

Specific areas of interest include: 

Landa Falls, New Braunfels, TX 

Landa Falls, New Braunfels, is situated at the Wurstfest Ground. The river is suitable for children because it is gently sloping and has a range of tubes. Additionally, they provide free vests. There is a shuttle bus to take to wherever you may wish to picnic around the grounds. 

Comal River 

River Comal flows through Landa Park, New Braunfels and Schlitterban Waterpark. It is a refreshing place to swim due to its temperatures (70-72). You can also go tubing or boating in the river. 

The Sophienburg Museum 

You can enjoy viewing a collection of maps, photographs, and artifacts exhibited at the Sophienburg Museum. To get to the museum, you have to go through the journey of Prince Carl and his settlers. You can also benefit from research materials, events, and lectures in the museum. You can visit the museum from Tuesday to Saturday, excluding holidays. 

Prince Solms Park 

The park gives you access to the Comal River and is ideal for outdoor activities. There is a lot to do in the park, including playing golf in the 9-hole disc, playing tennis, basketball, or picnic. In the Coma River, you can go boating or swimming. You can also rent a tube and float in the gently sloping river.
