Callahan County is located in Central Texas. Callahan county bounds Jones and Shackelford on the north, Brown and Coleman Counties on the south, Eastland County on the East, and Taylor County on the west. Callahan’s county seat and largest town is Baird, located 9 miles east of Abilene.  

Callahan County Topography 

The county has 899 square miles of grassy prairie and an elevation of 1500 to 1900 feet. Callahan County is split by low-range hills known as the Callahan Divide. The northern region of Callahan County is in the Brazos River basin, and the southern part is in the Colorado River basin.   

A large area of the county is covered in light to dark loam soils covering clayey to loamy subsoils. The southeast region soils are light-colored and have loam to sandy top layers and clayey subsoils. 21 to 30 percent of the land is regarded as good farmland.  

The eastern region of Callahan County has vegetation consisting of Cross timbers and Prairies regions containing different grasses like red grama, tumble grass, Texas grama, red love, and mesquite grass. The areas also have small trees like post oak, mesquite, and cacti.  

Callahan County Climate 

The region has a sub-humid and subtropical climate. Callahan County experiences warm summers and mild winters. Temperature ranges in January are between 31 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit and 71 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit in July. The rainfall is on average 25 inches, and snowfall is 6 inches. The county has an average of 230 days regarded as a growing season. The last freeze is in March and the first in November.   

The county experiences Tornadoes often. Since the county was established, it has undergone several bad extreme storms, the most common being Baird(1895), Oplin(1922), and Clyde(1938,1950).

Callahan’s county clerk is Nicole Crocker. You can reach her office through phone: 325-854-5815 or fax: 325-854-5816. The office located at 100 West Fourth Street is usually open from Monday till Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm, and on Friday, it closes at 2 pm.

The office also has Judge Stephen Odom as precinct 3 Justice of the Peace located in West Fourth Street. His office is open from Monday to Thursday between 8 am to 5 pm and Fridays it closes at 2 pm. Callahan County Sites 

Callahan County has a couple of tourist sites and activities for people to engage in. They include Abilene Zoo, Abilene Speedway, Prime Time Family Entertainment Center, Frontier Texas, Paramount Theatre, and Jacob’s dream sculpture.  

Callahan County also has the Pioneer Museum found in the basement section of the Callihan County Courthouse. The museum contains early agricultural and ranching artifacts. Pioneer Museum is open from Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm, and it is free to visit.
