Bexar County, TX, gets its name from San Antonio de Bexar. It is among Texas’s 23 Mexican administrative divisions and was founded on 20th December 1836.  

It’s the fifth-largest county covering almost the whole western region of Texas, including the disputed parts of New Mexico and Wyoming. 

Bexar County is in south-central TX, with a total area of 3253 square kilometers. It borders Kendall County, Wilson County, Comal County, Atascosa County, Bandera County, Guadalupe County, and Medina County. 

Bexar County Population 

92.5% of Bexar County’s population are United States residents. The county’s ethnicity is broken down as follows; 

  • The White, Hispanic are the largest group with 50.5% of the total population. 
  • 27% White, Non-Hispanic. 
  • 7.03% African American, Non-Hispanic. 
  • 6.58% Other, Hispanic. 
  • 2.86% Asian, Non-Hispanic. 

The estimated growth rate documented in 2009 was 2.39%. By 2018, Bexar County’s population was 1,925,865. According to the latest United States Census Bureau data, Bexar County’s population is 2,048,290 with a 1.10% growth rate. 

The population has grown by 18.89% since 2010. Also, in terms of households, about 58.3% of individuals own homes in the county. 

Bexar County Offices 

Bexar county has various offices. These offices perform different functions in the county governance as described below. 

The Fire Marshal’s Office location is on the street 9810, Southton Road. The office’s primary role is to protect the possessions and lives of Bexar County citizens from fires and dangers. In case of fire outbreaks, contact the office via Phone (210)335-0300 and Fax (210)335-0330. 

You can locate the Medical Examiner’s office in the environs of UT- Health San Antonio, a research institution and medical school. The chief medical examiner is Kimberly Molina. The office deals with investigations of all death cases in Bexar County. Moreover, you can contact 210-335-4011 if you have any doubts about the office’s procedures. 

The tax office offers vehicle labels and registration services. The office runs from Monday -Friday, between 8:00 AMprimary – 4:45 PM. The Bexar County Office of Criminal Justice has three parts; The Programs Office, The Policy Office, and The Planning Office. 

  • The Programs Office systematizes the Bexar County community allowance agendas and manages resources. 
  • The Policy Office heads the Office of Criminal Justice. It ensures that other offices advance toward the course of justice. 
  • The Planning Office handles the general county management. It designs and implements the budget and oversees communication and planning. 

Besides other responsibilities, the central role of the auditor’s office is to handle all financial matters of the county. For instance, it manages the county’s budget. Leo S. Caldera is the County auditor and the chief financial officer. 

Commissioner’s Court, Justice of Peace Courts, and Constables 

The Commissioner’s Court is the prime law-making body in the county. The leaders include the county judge plus four commissioners. In addition, the county judge acts as the chief executive officer. The county elects the judge, and the district elects the commissioners to 4-year terms. 

Justice of Peace Courts handle minor criminal cases and runs per the Texas Supreme Courts guidelines. The justice courts’ heads are eight justices elected to serve for 4-year terms. 

Four district-elected constables serve Bexar County for 4-year terms. The leading role of the constable(s) is maintaining peace in their locality.

The region considered safest by the residents is northeast of Bexar County. On average, the county’s crime rate is 39.20/1,000 residents.
